Tierra Del Fuego National Park & Santos Pub

Published: 01.03.2024

Rosario picked us up from the hotel around 9:00 a.m. Off we went to the NP. Either Rosario wasn't particularly keen or it was a communication problem. She “quickly” showed us three stations in the park and then wanted to drive out again. We made it clear to her that we also wanted to do a trekking tour. Of course she wanted more money because she had to come back to pick us up. At this point I no longer saw it as a communication problem, but rather a tactic ;-)! No matter, Daniela and I wanted to see the park and finally get going.

We decided on the coastal path. This is 8 km long. The start was at a pier. This was the post office at the end of the world :-). You could buy tickets there and of course send them too! There was a sticker on the office from a great football club in Pott :-)!!!

The path was tough. It went up and down. Often over roots, stones or nice soft forest floor. What certainly accompanied us for the 6 km was an amazing view of the sea. The view of the Andes was also fantastic again. Especially since some peaks were still covered in snow. The smell of salt and algae kept hitting our noses. Oh, I thought it was great, I had to stop again and again and take a deep breath. I said to Daniela, "Isn't that just BEAUTIFUL". Yes that was it. There were always cute bays where you could rest. We sat down on a large rock and ate our sandwiches. We looked at the sea and the surrounding mountains. We both were very happy with ourselves and the trekking. After the small snack there was a forest passage with a steep climb. When we reached the top, a woman lay on the path and cried. Some people were standing with her. Of course we asked if we could help. We were told that she was afraid of the sheer drop and now couldn't go forward or back. But we could go further. It's bad when you have something like that. We don't know if it's still there!

The last two kilometers were all through forest. This one looked totally mystical again. The trees had these tufts of hair that look like beards. There were also tons of fallen trees there and it creaked here and there. That seemed really scary. Then out of nowhere, there were some horses standing around us. Totally cute, two little horses were there too. The group diligently pulled grass out of the ground and ate leisurely. They didn't let us bother them at all.

Then the goal was finally in sight. Phew, the 8 km was tough, but it was a great trail with great impressions. After the trekking, we rewarded ourselves with empanadas in the park restaurant and were able to enjoy the wonderful view again.

Back at the hotel, we spent half an hour in the whirlpool and relaxed our legs.

It quickly became clear that we would end the evening in a super cool pub. It was the Santos pub, which is designed like a train carriage - totally clocky with a lot of flair. One of the tourist attractions in Ushuaia is the "Tren del Fin del Mundo", whose train route was previously used to transport materials for the construction of the prison here.

After the second wheat we looked for a new first name for me. It's crazy, no one here can pronounce "Anke"...

Muchos saludos, Anke & Daniela
