On the Trail of the Trolls: Hiking in Hustadvika

Published: 25.08.2025

14 km

Since we didn't have a travel day today, we could wonderfully sleep in. To then have another beautiful view from the bed. This little joy every morning makes me start the day in a completely different way. How could anyone not feel completely enchanted with such a view?

It's wonderful to wake up like this

In any case, we have an ambitious plan: we want to go to the Troll Church. Waterfalls in caves sound right up my alley. I try to create a route using our hiking app. The idea is to hike there from our campsite and back again the same way. 7 km each way, so 14 in total, sounds doable.

However, the app immediately indicates that there will be difficult sections. So we set out already considering the option that we may not reach our goal. But who doesn't take risks? So I made sandwiches, got dressed in my usual onion look, and off we go.

I'll make it short: unfortunately, we didn't reach the Troll Church. The hike was still nice! But what was supposed to be a path on the marked area was already an exciting matter. And there was no longer any marked path to our target.

We took a couple of attempts trying to sense a way, but ultimately we decided to turn back. I still mourn a bit for the Troll Church... from the other side of the mountain, the path is apparently completely doable. We should have just driven the camper the half hour to the parking lot on the other side - but we didn’t. So that's going on my mental list for the next vacation here 🤓

Unfortunately we can
Unfortunately we can't make it over these mountains today

However, it looked like trolls were around us too, and I could swear I heard them giggling with all our stumbling. Also in the beautiful swamp areas we had to traverse, which made slurping sounds with every step. I think they had fun watching us today 😁 but they also gifted me with beautiful pictures. Since we turned around, I had more time for a few photos.

Good footwear definitely helped

A few little details up close today

Highlight motif for me today: the troll couch at the end of our path. We both didn’t notice it on the way there. I am almost sure it wasn’t there before 😃 It looks slightly surreal, but it’s one of my favorite pictures so far.

For the rest of the evening, we are putting our feet up. No more cooking today, the leftovers from today’s provisions are still available.

We are already curious about what to discover in Ålesund tomorrow 😊
