From Muscat to Jebel Akhdar
After 3 days in the big city, we went into the mountains. First to Birkat al-Mauz. Here we visited an old village. Traditionally, it was built with clay. Now it is partly in ruins...

We left the Jebel Akhdar early at 5 AM for Nizwa. We definitely wanted to visit the goat market, which starts around 7 AM.
The goat market takes place every Friday. The sellers lead their individual goats in a circle past potential buyers. If there is interest, the goat is inspected, negotiation happens, and then the deal is concluded. Afterward, the purchased goats are tied up on the side while people continue to browse. Overall, it’s quite a lively scene. A few bulls are also offered at the end, but there aren’t many, and they don’t lead in a circle as easily.
In Nizwa, the old fort is very worth seeing, and so is the souq for shopping. We stay right in the old town, allowing us to enjoy the nightlife.
