The cinema event at Villa Hügel, ESSEN

The film Downton Abbey, also known as a British success series (2012 on ZDF), is set in 1927 at the namesake Castle.

Briefly about the story: King George and Queen Mary announce their visit to the estate. The news causes enormous excitement and conflicts among the staff. The visit culminates in a lavish parade and a dinner combined with the invitation to the ballroom.

For me, the biggest star was Maggie Smith (1934-2024) in the role of Violet as the Countess. She infused the events with sharp wit and dry British humor. An example: 'A lack of compassion can be just as vulgar as an excess of tears.' or 'No life seems worth living when you think about it too much.'

Highclere Castle is built in the 19th century Neo-Renaissance style. It is located in Hampshire and is the English mansion of the Earl of Carnarvon.

Villa Hügel also serves as an impressive symbol of wealth and the lifestyle of the late 19th century. It represents the industrial bourgeoisie of the Krupp family.

Both houses are enormous (up to 300 rooms), which also served for representation.

Highclere Castle is a magnificent residence and was the filming location for 'Downton Abbey'.

Villa Hügel, also a private residence, naturally served as a center for business representation and was the filming location for the 2009 drama 'Krupp - A German Family'. Here, the atmosphere surrounding Bertha Krupp (1886-1957) was skillfully captured in its original form.

Both estates are surrounded by generous, very well-maintained expansive parks.

This combination of the screening of 'Downton Abbey' in the historically significant setting of Villa Hügel, thus the opulent British aristocracy with the industrial cultural heritage of the Ruhr area fits perfectly and initiates a nostalgic charm, making the movie night a soulful experience.
