An eventful week filled with new experiences, sustainability, and deep friendships has come to an end! On our last day in Romania, a full agenda awaited us – from exciting explorations to a beautiful, emotional closing evening.
Morning: Museum tour & environmental challenges
Our day began with a visit to the Museum of the Iron Gates Region (Muzeul Regiunii Porților de Fier). After an informative tour, the students dove straight into practical activities: in mixed German-Romanian teams, they faced various indoor and outdoor challenges specifically focused on environmental, nature, and sustainability topics.
The four teams completed two task areas each:
Group 1 (Danube & Bridge): Investigated native fish species of the Danube in the aquarium and the threat posed by microplastics. Outside at the remnants of the historical Trajan's Bridge, they compared the durability of ancient Roman stone with modern building materials.
Group 2 (Culture & Nature): Examined traditional “zero waste” lifestyles in comparison to today’s plastic products at the ethnography department. At the Roman fort (Roman Castrum), they analyzed the weathering of stone versus plastic waste.
Group 3 (Energy & Riverbanks): Analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of hydropower plants using the plant at the Iron Gates as an example. Outside by the Danube, they conducted a waste audit to assess which types of waste can be recycled.
Group 4 (Lifecycle & Green Design): Conducted a material scavenger hunt in the museum and examined decomposition times of different materials. Outside in the park, they developed sustainable green design ideas to enhance the park area.
As a final result, the groups created 60-second reels/TikTok videos to creatively and vividly showcase their findings.
A festive closing evening filled with joy and music
In the evening, the farewell party took place in the elegant hall of our hotel. The night was full of laughter, music, and real community:
Music & Dance: A Romanian student sang traditional songs live for us. The atmosphere was exhilarating – everyone danced together, and the Romanian youth taught the German guests the traditional dance steps.
Ceremonial certificate presentation: In a festive setting, the official Erasmus+ certificates for the project week “Green Steps Global Impact” were presented to all participating students, the teaching team, and the involved schools.

Another highlight of the evening was the awarding of the three competitions that took place during the week:
City Rally: Three mixed teams of six youths each, who scored the most points on the city tasks, received certificates.
Nature and Upcycling Creative Contest (“Green Steps Creative Minds”): Award for the best artworks created in a workshop from recycled materials and nature findings.
Photography contest: During the excursions to the Danube and the forest, the students took landscape photos in German-Romanian tandems. On the closing night, everyone voted live to decide which images were the most beautiful. The winners received certificates, delicious Romanian chocolate, and other great little prizes!
A poignant farewell
Around 9:00 PM, the celebration finally came to an end. There was an incredibly warm atmosphere: in the short time of the project week, strangers had become true friends. The farewell was very touching for many, and some tears were shed as these beautiful shared days came to an end.
It was an overall successful Erasmus+ week that will remain in the memories of all involved for a long time!
