We start early in the day and leave the campsite shortly after 8 AM. After 30 minutes, we stop at
Goðafoss, another waterfall on our journey. It is truly beautiful to behold. It also ranks among our top waterfalls in Iceland.
Goðafoss is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland. Although it is only 11 meters high, it measures 158 meters wide. We observe it from several perspectives before moving on. There are many mosquitoes in Iceland, but fortunately, they don’t bite. They can be annoying nonetheless. The landscape becomes greener, and agriculture is increasingly practiced. Mainly, hay is grown for livestock. Everywhere we see sheep and horses. We cross the north and also stop in Akureyri. A city with about 20,000 inhabitants right by the fjord. To save on tunnel fees, we take the route along the fjord and are rewarded with a beautiful view of the bay. In Akureyri, we stroll through the city center. It is very modern and doesn’t offer us much. We walk for half an hour through the shopping street and to the modern church. Afterwards, we do some shopping and refuel. The next stretch is almost 200 kilometers.
We make a stop halfway for lunch and observe several young people as they maintain the green spaces. Their enthusiasm is remarkable. I then read that there are youth programs where young people do this work voluntarily or for payment during the holidays.
To catch another highlight, we drive to Hvítserkur. Unfortunately, the road is a gravel road for 30 kilometers, so it’s unpaved. This isn’t always indicated on Google Maps; sometimes it appears suddenly in the route. At the parking lot, we choose the path to the beach. There, we see about 40 seals lying on the opposite side. Unfortunately, they are very relaxed and lying around lazily. Before the kids start building a sandcastle, we walk to the 15-meter-high basalt stone shaped like a dragon or rhinoceros. Now it's another 113 kilometers west. Around 6 PM, we reach Búðardalur, a small village on the west coast. In planning the trip, we decide to drive a lot on this day, as the north doesn’t have much to offer us. In the evening, it rains shortly after our arrival. Usually, we can only sit outside briefly in the evenings, as it quickly becomes cold or too windy.
