Murchison Falls National Park

Here, the Victoria Nile plunges through a gorge that is only seven meters wide, falling 43 meters and creating one of the most powerful waterfalls in Africa.

Before we set sail along the Nile, we first drive to the edge of the Murchison Falls. On foot, we explore the rushing waters of the Nile that thunder down between the rocky edges, creating a massive spray cloud.

The spray provides a refreshing shower, which had already been hinted at by the rangers at the parking lot! In just a few seconds, we are soaking wet 😆

After this little detour, we briefly rest at our accommodation. The Red Chilli Rest Camp is wonderfully located and offers a view not far above the Nile.

And off we go to the next adventure. With a ranger in the back seat, we set off on a night safari. Equipped with a rifle and a strong flashlight, she leads us deep into the park. The goal is to spot one of the lion prides! Initially, we see relatively few animals: The scenery is incredibly green, but many animals blend into the dense vegetation. However, buffaloes and giraffes have a hard time hiding 😁

The ranger drives us to several spots where lions are frequently seen. And indeed! After a short search, we come across the first adult lionesses right in front of us on a small dirt road.

Shortly behind them, several mothers with their lion cubs are also present. We watch the scene fascinated before we turn around and leave the pride in peace...

Exhausted, we collapse into our beds, but sleep is the last thing on our minds! A heavy thunderstorm rages around us, and the camp is soon under water... Luckily, we had booked a solid hut instead of a tent. Suddenly, we felt a severe blow against the wall from the inside. A smaller tree fell during the storm and brushed against our cabin. So we can sleep peacefully; it could have been worse!

The next morning, we start early with lunch packages: We want to go on a morning game drive! However, after the night-time storm, the ground is very soft, and the way into the park is quite adventurous. After a brief slide down a slope, we almost get stuck. The vehicle is already hanging by the edge of the road next to the ditch. With the help of several people, we can fortunately get the vehicle back in position.

At least we see some kob antelopes and warthogs not far from the road.

After having a similar experience on the other side of the main road, we’ve had enough! From the safety of the asphalt road, we can still spot a few animals!

Next, we embark on a boat tour upstream on the Nile. The landing point is directly below the Red Chili Camp. The goal is to catch a glimpse of the Murchison Falls from below the rapids!

On the way there, we see numerous hippos and Nile crocodiles lying at the water's edge.

The crocodiles can rarely grow over 6 meters in length. A male can weigh up to 1000 kg...

Especially for bird lovers, the ride on the Nile is a true paradise! However, without a good lens, we can’t get very close, but the majestic fish eagle is always easy to spot!

After these unique experiences, we hit the road. We want to reach the far east of the country in two days.
