I'm really lucky to have gone through this trip so far in good health, except for a cold from the air conditioning. I can only imagine what I might have missed out on if I had been sick. The combination of long periods of sitting on the bus, general travel exhaustion, lack of sleep due to snoring travel companions, and a social battery running low mean that my head can only handle so much without maxing out on painkillers. And this is in the marine mammal paradise of Kaikoura! Here you can see whales, swim with dolphins, and I would love to do both, but I would have to get up at 5 am on the second day, and my body is clearly saying: No way! And even though this is frustrating, I'm proud that I listen to it. As a reward, my body lets me enjoy the moments when I'm in the water. And that one dolphin swims in circles around me, looks at me, and I like to think that with its eyes, it's saying: Well done! Other than that, the day consists of just one power nap, pizza from the stone oven, and hot chocolate. Unfortunately, at night there is again so much loud snoring that at 2 am I catch a couple getting cozy in the kitchen when I want to make myself a tea. Sigh. I would really rather be sleeping...
