Today is a day when I first need to be alone with myself. I can feel this urgently because I’m in a bad mood during the drive to Abel Tasman National Park and because of that I’m somewhat unfriendly. The fact that some people are once again attaching themselves to me, shouting 'Katie, after you?!' since I'm the only one who has been looking into the paths and routes beforehand, doesn't make it any better. I disconnect myself from the group after 10 minutes of walking. And as I walk along, I think about which famous person I would like to walk with here to have a conversation. Admittedly, I don’t know where 'famous' begins, but for me, it would be Barbara Bleisch. Simply because in her latest book, she writes down thoughts that are so fitting for this day: 'Upon arriving at the lake, the view is breathtaking, just as it was before. How many more times will I stand here and marvel at the sheer beauty of this landscape? Compared to the age of this spot, my stay on earth is unbelievably short, a meaningless blink in eternity, nothing more. Sometimes I find this comforting because it gives me distance from my own life. All the questions that occupy me - what I should fight against, what I should accept, what I should still tackle, what I should let go of, all these questions seem to lose relevance in light of the temporal dimensions of the landscape around me. Yet sometimes I find the realization of the unjustifiably short duration of my own life also despairing because life is beautiful and I still have so much planned while time seems to be slipping away from me.' Today a water taxi brought me to a beach; I first hiked in silence with myself and then with two other girls to the Cleopatra Pools and various viewpoints. I spoke with an Israeli woman about the war in her daily life. I swam after the ebb and then walked through the wet sand almost across the sea to the next beach. One hiking companion nearly fell off the path due to an unthoughtful movement from another person. On the way home, I saw such a beautiful sunset that it shook my travel plans for the last two weeks. Not only the dimensions of the landscape sometimes make me feel like a brief flicker today... And, who would you like to meet?
