INTO THE JUNGLE! - Pforzheim's Gasometer takes you to the Amazon

Outside it is icy cold and uncomfortable. Some may enjoy the chill, but many of you prefer to dream yourselves away to warmer regions, surrounded by lush greenery and untouched nature.That’s why we are taking you to Pforzheim today. Yes, even in Pforzheim it’s winter buuut, not everywhere! The Gasometer is prominently visible in the East district of Pforzheim. Built in 1912, it served for almost 100 years as a compensation tank for the gas supply of Pforzheim and is today one of the last remaining bell gas containers in the country. It stands as a landmark, reminding us of the former site of the municipal gas works and the era of industrialization. Preserving this industrial monument and impressive testament to German engineering was a major concern for the partners of the Parkhotel Pforzheim. In just eight months, 6,000 tons of concrete, 1,000 tons of steel, and 5,000 square meters of stainless steel facade were used. The newly created stainless steel cylinder stands 42 meters tall and 40 meters wide. These dimensions allow Yadegar Asisi to present the largest panoramic artworks in the world in Pforzheim. The 3,000 m² giant mural AMAZONIA transports its visitors into the diverse forms of vegetation and the complex ecosystem of the Amazon basin. It artistically condenses an exotic, fascinating, and simultaneously mysterious world. Nature dazzles with its enchanting beauty yet remains unexplored for many. The Berlin artist Yadegar Asisi has captured this fascinating world in his 360° panorama. With a length of about 106 meters and a height of 27 meters, AMAZONIA provides a lifelike representation of the rainforest at a scale of 1:1. Gigantic trees reaching towards the sky, long-hanging roots, the greenish twilight, and the multifaceted sounds of wildlife create an immersive experience. If you’ve never been in a jungle, and most people haven’t, you realize here how small humans are in relation to untouched nature. From the visitor tower, a breathtaking view opens up to the majestic treetops, colorful plants, and exotic animals. Details like caterpillars on leaves, sloths in trees, or parrots high in the treetops show Asisi's love for detail. A sophisticated light installation simulates the transition from day to night, while music composed specifically by Eric Babak immerses visitors in the foreign world of the rainforest. Inspired by the unimaginable biodiversity and perfection of nature, Asisi traveled to the Amazon region four times. He took countless photographs, sketches, watercolors, and drawings that form the basis for the panorama. AMAZONIA invites you to explore this distant and unique world in a special way and let yourself be enchanted by its beauty and complexity. So, why wander far away when wonder lies so close? The Gasometer in Pforzheim offers AMAZONIA as a place where you can escape the winter and experience the impressive diversity of the rainforest – without leaving the city.
