Large Dunes - Small River Pools

We will set up our camp for 2 nights at the campground of Germans (already born by name) - Hautab Fountain - by a small river that has delightful pools for swimming.

On the second day, we will leave at 5:30 am to drive about 40 km to the entrance of Soussuvlai, the vast dune landscape, which is at its most beautiful in the early morning. One part of the dunes is shaded, while the other is illuminated by the sun.

After about 60 km and partially on deeper sandy tracks, we reach the so-called Death Vlai. There, we climb one of the larger dunes, from where we have a good panoramic view. The ascent is strenuous because the sand naturally shifts with every step, and one walks in deep tracks.

On the backside of the dune, we jump down into the deep sand of Death Vlai, where dead trees provide a stunning photo backdrop. By now, it has become very hot, and we are pleased to have breakfast under a tree.

Back at the campground, there's a refreshing dip in the river, and then I cook a potato goulash, which is a nice change from the very meat-heavy cuisine here.

In the morning, we part ways with our travel partners for 5 days. We want to conquer the high passes in the mountains, while they are drawn to the rugged coastline of Swakopmund. Werner is a fisherman and wants to try his luck fishing there. Since the weather forecast for the coast is rather poor, we prefer the mountains.
