Day 35 - Langkawi, Malaysia (15.02.2020)

Langkawi - Unfortunately, we expected a little more from the island, as it is recommended as a 'must see' in Malaysia by many.

The nature and landscape of the island have a lot to offer, but here we saw the negative aspects that tourism brings with it.

The city's streets are characterized by countless duty-free shops, along with Western breakfast restaurants. This is because Langkawi is located near the sea border to Thailand, and there are supposedly cheap deals for alcohol and chocolate here (There was more selection of children's, Milka, and Lindt chocolate than in some German supermarkets).

What we really missed were the local food and fruit stands that we enjoyed so much in Thailand.

Even the largest beach in Cenang reminds me more of Ballermann with all the water jet ski providers.

With the many tourists, of course, comes the problem of plastic waste, which is simply lying around everywhere and is usually burned by the locals.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed our days here and explored the island again with the scooter (we rented the scooter from a really cool Pakistani guy who can barely fend off inquiries due to his many Google 5-star ratings, but has to hide from the police because it is very difficult for foreigners to operate a business in Malaysia).

We went up high when we took the cable car to Langkawi Skybridge at about 700 meters above sea level. The view from there was spectacular, but not for people with a fear of heights. (Bianca struggled a bit :))

In the modern hostel where we spent 5 nights in a 32-bed dormitory, we met young (and old) people and spent most evenings there playing pool or UNO and enjoying a cold Tiger beer.

Now we are drawn to the big city and we will make our way to Kuala Lumpur by ferry & train!
