To learn how to ski, I went to the Erzgebirge region to the Oberwiesenthal/Klinovec ski resort. The best ski instructor B. and his girlfriend V. were with me. In Oberwiesenthal, we were disappointed at first because not a single ski rental shop (out of at least 10) had any skis, helmets, or poles for us. But after crossing the border to the Czech Republic, we found what we needed in Bozi Dar. The local rental shop, run by an old ski guy who served Becherovka drinks and an older lady who handled the finances, had everything we needed. Luckily, there were also some beginner slopes in this area where I was gently taught the first steps. In the evening, we drove to Karlovy Vary where our nice little hotel was located. In the following days, after a hearty breakfast, we always drove to Klinovec. There, we were greeted by a beautiful winter landscape that was already a sight to behold from the chairlift. After a few hours on skis, I noticed that I was improving and could make some turns without doing the snowplow technique. The number of falls also decreased and my confidence in going down the slope increased. But the fun was always there. However, we did take a day off and took a walk through Karlovy Vary, drank from the healing springs, enjoyed Czech cuisine, and tasted Karlovy Vary waffles.
