Day 15: Norderney - Norddeich - Emden

已发表: 28.06.2023

Got up at 7 am with the alarm clock! Managed to do everything on time for checking out of our accommodation. We quickly walked to the port and caught the 10:15 am ferry. Then we took the train to Emden.

The weather is very cloudy and much cooler. We were planning to hike to Leer tomorrow, but we'll see. Hopefully it won't rain, otherwise it will be a challenging walk. The area along Dollart Bay and the Ems River is supposed to be very beautiful and rich in biodiversity.

Arrived in Emden and boarded bus 6 at the train station. It was packed with three strollers, a walker, a wheelchair, and us with our pilgrimage cart! It was a tight fit.

Reached the final stop and switched to a smaller, completely empty bus that took us to the hotel, which used to be a farm called Gulfhof. A nice place to spend the night.

After a short siesta, we went into town.

To be continued

Emden has a population of just over 50,000, two of whom are famous German comedians: Otto Waalkes and Karl Dall. The pedestrian traffic lights are unusually funny here when they turn green (see pictures)!

We spent the whole afternoon walking around the town, despite the drizzle, and later stopped at a bar for a delicious draft Jever beer: Tulpe, poured for 7 minutes!

We had Asian food for dinner, as we couldn't find any other restaurants that appealed to us. It was the best decision - the food was incredibly delicious!

To get back, we took bus 6 to the outskirts of the city, and then half an hour later we switched to bus 16 and got off at the Widdeswehrwiddelswehrster Warf stop, which is quite in the middle of nowhere.

Until tomorrow👋

Got up early with the alarm clock! At 7 am, we did everything we needed to do to check out of the house, had breakfast, and quickly made our way to the 10:15 am ferry to Norddeich Mole. We easily made it, and in Norddeich Mole, we took the train to Emden.

The weather has cooled down significantly and it's cloudy today. Tomorrow, we plan to hike to Leer, hopefully not too much rain. We'll be walking along the Dollard and the Ems, a beautiful area with a rich variety of species.

Arriving in Emden, we took bus 6 to our hotel. The bus goes through Emden and is filled with strollers, wheelchair users, and us with our pilgrimage cart! It's a tight fit.

We transferred to a smaller but thankfully less crowded bus and arrived at the hotel, which used to be a farm and is now a charming place to stay.

We'll take a short nap and then head into the city.

To be continued

Emden has a population of 50,000, two of whom are famous German comedians: Otto Waalkes and Karl Dall. It's funny that the pedestrian lights look exactly like Otto's walk (see pictures)!

We spent the whole afternoon walking around the town and ended up at a terrace called Het Wapen van Emden, where we enjoyed a freshly tapped Jever beer served in a tulip glass, which takes 7 minutes to pour... then we had a delicious dinner at an Asian restaurant. We quickly took bus 6 back to the hotel, but we had to switch to bus 16, which added an extra half hour to the journey. Well... we have to go to Widdeswehrwiddelswehrster Warf, which is quite remote!

See you tomorrow!
