The good food in this area is becoming a problem, our jeans are uncomfortably tight, and we are moving quite sluggishly. Yesterday we ate at Corte dei Toldi in the mountains, everything was excellent, especially the risotto with pine shoots and fresh cheese. They also have nice rooms, but they are quite expensive, and we are glad we chose our accommodation, Casa incantata in Revò, because it is nice (and cheaper), although it would be tempting to eat at Corte dei Toldi more than once.
We have become good friends with Angelo Baschenis (you can find more about the Baschenis family relationships here). He belongs to the oldest generation of Baschenis who have worked here in Trentino and his paintings are very medieval. The perspective is not quite right, the figures are stiff and elongated - everything is not as dynamic as with the Renaissance painter Simone II. He did not leave behind many frescoes here, but we liked what we saw: elegant and very skillful, especially the apse of SS. Fabiano e Sebastiano in Flavon.
We did not really warm up to Giovanni and Battista, even though we saw some spectacular frescoes today in the beautiful Castel Valer in the chapel. They are remarkably well-preserved, having only been cleaned and never restored. Nevertheless, they look as if they were applied to the walls yesterday. The two brothers seem to have made more effort and perhaps had more time here. Our assumption is that the noble patrons paid better than the municipalities for their village churches - that would be a parallel to SS. Rocco e Sebastiano in Pergnano, where Cristoforo II worked much more carefully on behalf of the local nobility. In the frescoes of Castel Valer, there are no sins to be found, which we boldly attribute to Battista, but there are definitely some in the tiny church of Tres: two Church Fathers who we think are from Battista, as they are much more clumsy compared to the other two. By the way, here in Castel Valer, there is an inscription painted on the wall that confirms that the two brothers were the creators.
