I am used to having opera tickets for the whole next year in my drawer, making appointments months in advance, and considering research projects with a three-month duration to be too short. But when a trip lasts six months, suddenly half a year can also be a very long time: for me and also for many people I have told about our world trip.
A world trip! Actually, I thought that only I would still find such a trip to be something extraordinary. After all, I am already quite middle-aged and know hundreds of churches in Italy and France, but have never been to one of the more exotic countries from our Eurocentric perspective. But no, even my friends, acquaintances, colleagues, and coworkers got a longing look when they heard the beautiful words world trip.
The idea of writing a blog is foreign to me and actually doomed to failure. I have never been able to keep a diary, I don't like taking photos, and I think that my experiences only have meaning for me. Let's see what comes of it. In any case, I am looking forward to everyone who will accompany us - Roby and me - on our great adventure virtually. For us it is an adventure - really! We are incredibly excited and also a little bit afraid.
* You have to reveal a little something about yourself in such a blog, right? Who writes about 'long' and 'short' years when it is actually clearly defined how long a year lasts, must have something to do with history. In addition to this outing for insiders, I have also included a tribute to the esteemed Fernand Braudel and his three-volume journey through the Mediterranean in the 16th century. Absolutely recommended.
