City with a great historical heritage

Pubblicato: 03.10.2023

We spent a day in Autun - built by the Roman Emperor Augustus in the 10th century BC. Founded as Augustodunum in the 1st century BC – on a voyage of discovery. From here begins the Morvan, the region that we also wanted to visit, but then postponed until “maybe later”.

A few things immediately catch your eye when walking through Autun: the half-timbered houses typical of Burgundy, the mighty Saint-Lazare Cathedral, the spacious square in the center with the many bistros and cafés, the steep streets with the many attractive shops, the Tour des Ursulines or the 6 kilometer long Gallo-Roman city wall. And of course the buildings that the Romans left behind (or at least parts of them): bridges, aqueducts, temples and, above all, the amphitheater.

Since sightseeing makes you hungry, we refreshed ourselves at “L'Augusto” with a delicious beef carpaccio – from Charolais beef, of course – and a glass of local wine.
