Our main goal in Pucón was to climb the Villarrica Volcano. The Mapuche people also call the volcano "Ruca Pillan", which means House of the Great Spirits.
Our tour started at 6 in the morning. We took a bus to the starting point at an altitude of about 1,400 meters. From there, we hiked towards the summit (2,860 meters) with crampons and ice axes. The whole volcano is still covered in snow and the last third remains under a thick layer of ice all year round.
After a challenging ascent, we reached the summit in the early afternoon. Being an active volcano, it welcomed us with rumbling sounds and thick clouds of smoke.
From the top, we had a magnificent panoramic view of the lake region and the Andes.
For the descent, we slid down on our bottoms 😄 It made the descent easier and a lot of fun.
