Huka Falls, spectacle of nature

Naipablaak: 06.09.2018

When we arrived in Taupo, we were initially quite overwhelmed by all the things we wanted to do. The town is considered the 'Queenstown' of the North Island and has the reputation of being an adventurous city.

In the hostel, we met two French girls who offered to take us for a walk to the 'Huka Falls' the next morning. We were initially overwhelmed because we had never heard of the 'Huka Falls' in all our research. And we have done a lot of research. So we arranged to meet the others the next morning at 10 o'clock to start hiking.

The view from a hidden plateau was breathtaking!

We started at 10 o'clock. We hiked for about one and a half hours until we reached the 'Huka Falls'. We walked along a really beautiful hiking trail. The trail led along the small river.

Unfortunately, it was difficult to capture the length of the waterfall in a picture. This is the end of this 100 meter long waterfall.

At some point, we heard a loud noise. We knew we couldn't be far away. In the silence, the waterfall seemed gigantic loud. Eventually, we finally saw them. It was amazing. The water shimmered blue like in the Caribbean, probably due to the bubbling and foaming water. I have never seen such a long waterfall in my life. It had the length of a football field (estimated). It was definitely gigantic long. Unbelievable!

The Caribbean in a river? Apparently, that's possible.

The water shot through this kind of 'rapids' incredibly fast. We didn't want to leave this place. We took our photos and enjoyed the view and the unique atmosphere.

On the way back, we stopped at the so-called 'Hot Water Springs'. These are boiling hot springs that flow into the river. You can bathe there. Over the millennia, nature has formed 'whirlpool'-like pits that are perfect for taking a little bath. We put on our swimsuits and took a seat in the water and relaxed. The waterfalls all around invited us to have a neck massage.

Perfect place to relax and good for the skin.

Afterwards, we packed our things and walked back to the hotel for about 40 minutes. We personally loved the trip and highly recommend it to anyone planning to make a stop in Taupo!
