The town of Gela in the southeast of Sicily is unknown as a holiday destination - fortunately! Here you can spend your holiday for less than 70k reads - nobody speaks German here. This is what a typical day in Gela can look like.
Well, almost nobody speaks German here, unless you've made the right choice for breakfast and are sitting in the Roc Bar with your cappuccino and cornetto. With a bit of luck, you'll meet someone in a good mood who will greet you with a friendly "What's up, guys?" A few years in Frankfurt leave their mark. :)
The Roc Bar is open from 7 a.m. and you sit directly on the main street between citrus trees, Fiats and Piaggios.
After breakfast, it's off to the sea! Gela is right by the sea and has a very good beach for swimming. The beach right next to the town is cleaned regularly. Don't forget: parasols and sunscreen - you can buy parasols right on the street by the beach (approx. 20 EUR).
There are many restaurants on the promenade down by the beach, most of which are packed in the evenings. Here are the top restaurants in Gela.
By far the most beautiful restaurant in Gela. Everything is just right here: the atmosphere, the food and the people. A reservation is a must, and it's best to make one a few days in advance.
Pizza, pizza, pizza. And be sure to sit outside under the fairy lights. Nice atmosphere and even nicer pizzas. It's always busy, so it's best to make a reservation or come by an hour beforehand. Prices are between 7 and 9 EUR per pizza.
The go-to restaurant down on the promenade. Good pizzas, good starters (fries are a must!). Try it!
A somewhat strange habit of the locals is to hang out at the GB Oil petrol station. But for good reason! Here you can get fresh cornetti from 4am - perfect to end the night or start the next day.
The best way to get to Gela from Catania Airport (CTA) is by bus from ETNA Trasporti . The buses usually run every hour (eight minutes after the hour) and then every two hours from 8 a.m. The bus stop is right outside the airport exit. There you will also find the small bus ticket booths. The journey to Gela takes around 90 minutes and costs 8 EUR per person. The buses are well air-conditioned, even if they are a bit worn.
