Mount Kailash in Ngari, western Tibet is a sacred pilgrimage site respected by four major religions. The classic outer circumambulation route stretches 52 km, with the highest Dolma La Pass reaching 5630 m, which makes it a tough high-altitude trek suitable for experienced outdoor lovers.
Basic Trek Info
Total distance: 52 km
Recommended duration: 3 days (easier altitude adaptation)
Best travel window: May to October
Starting & ending point: Darchen
Must-have documents: Tibet Travel Permit + Ngari border pass
A 3-day schedule greatly reduces altitude sickness risk, and you will have enough time to admire snow mountain views, visit ancient monasteries along the trail and learn local pilgrimage culture. Day 1 we hike 20km from Darchen to Drirapuk Monastery; Day 2 cross the challenging Dolma La Pass to Zutrul Puk; Day 3 walk downhill back to Darchen for 10km.
Many first-time trekkers ignore entry document preparation and altitude training before departure. I sorted full daily schedules, altitude change curves, supply station locations and permit application tips for the whole kora trail.
