How to get there

Publié: 05.03.2017

So, it was supposed to start from Frankfurt at 20:45 on 01.03. I can only recommend taking such a late flight, because it was really relaxed. ;) Besides, you have time in the morning to pack the really last things, because maybe you started packing just the day before. ^^

Then Papa took me to Frankfurt and we were so early that we had a big coffee in peace and quiet and were already able to find our way around this huge airport. An extra highlight was also Hannah, who spontaneously drove from Mainz and said goodbye to me!! So awesome!!

Everything really went smoothly. But not only on that day, but also in the whole preparation in the last months. I had actually decided to go to South Africa just shortly before Christmas, not to Iceland or Australia. Getting the visa took only about 3 weeks in total, so everything was planned so quickly and well that I noticed more and more that God is 100% with my plans! And that I still got a confirmation for a room here in the student dormitory on the day of my departure (!!) also showed that. God is really so good!

So it really started. The first moments alone there through the security check and along the gates were quite bumpy and scary. But finally boarding started and I was allowed on the plane. AMAZING! If you come to visit me here, definitely choose South African Airways. Lots of legroom, delicious food, great movies, nice people and the seat next to me was free, so I could actually get some sleep.

I had to change planes in Johannesburg once, but that went well too. Only at passport control I suddenly got really scared. The officer saw my visa and asked me again what I was going to do there. And I was so tired and not at all prepared to speak English that I could only stammer a few phrases and already thought that was it. No study abroad semester...

But luckily maybe he didn't notice that so much and still put his stamp on it and I was actually allowed to enter South Africa!!!

The flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town was only 2 hours and I was able to take many great photos from the plane. I even recognized Stellenbosch from the air! Amazingly, I was even picked up from the airport by a student from Stellenbosch and brought here, great service. And then I arrived here... after a 14-hour flight, I came from Germany to South Africa. Really crazy!

The huge advantage here in Stellenbosch is that one of my fellow students from Stralsund, his name is Marin, has been here since November! He picked me up right after arriving in Stellenbosch, and first took me to all the important places and then I came to my room.... maybe the pictures speak for themselves :D

But it's okay. I probably won't spend that much time here. But my roommates are all fine.

In the evening, Marin already showed me a bit of the city, some bars, the popular drink of the students here and I already got to know many people.

At some point, I was finally able to fall into my bed. Very happy to be here, but also very unsure about what to expect.
