After the philosophical-sociological discussions last night with Jan, the Dutch theologian - in search of a synthesis between modern individualism and being embedded in a community - I am really looking forward to Saint Francis and his impressive church. I cycled past this huge, clinging to the hill building yesterday.
I get up early, the Dutch and the ambitious Pole, who wants to cycle 2000 km from Rome to home in 14 days, want to leave before it gets hot, we formed our mini-enclave at the campsite yesterday.
There is hardly anything going on yet, I can calmly admire the wall paintings painted by Giotto and his students in the upper church. In the central nave, I stumble upon the ongoing worship service and stay, letting myself be enchanted by the mythical atmosphere that prevails here.
The Franciscan monks walking around outside come from all continents, of course, it's their main church, and some of them are definitely pilgrims or faith tourists. The city is slowly waking up and the streams of tourists are getting thicker. A special worship service takes place in Chiesa San Pietro, maybe a wedding, the church is packed with splendidly dressed Italians.
Quickly bought some groceries at the tigre supermarket, which fortunately is also open on Sundays, and back up the steep hill before it gets too hot. Chilled afternoon with a view over the plain and finally a bit of dolce far niente..
