The breakfast at the lovely old lady's was as expected. We had porridge, toast, orange marmalade, and tea, all served in fine porcelain. We couldn't help but pinky-swear while drinking - very English.
We took the bikes out of the barn, hoped no sheep had nibbled on them, and rode towards Sheeps Head Lighthouse on the Sheeps Head Peninsula. For the first time, the weather showed us a bit of the Irish coastal fog. We pushed it aside and set off on a 4-kilometer hike (Lighthouse Loop) along the cliffs. The colors were simply breathtaking, blue and lush green. Thanks to the new super mega safety lock, Anja could also enjoy it while leaving Rosi alone for a while. Back with Rosi, yes she was still there, we had homemade vegetable soup and fine Irish soda bread. (The bread is super delicious, especially with lots of butter). Calories don't matter to us; we usually eat like gluttons, everything that sounds delicious and what we're in the mood for. We don't pay attention to eating specifically, like with bananas and the like. We simply enjoy everything Irish that we don't know.
Our journey on the Sheeps Head Peninsula continues towards Bantry, where we have reserved a room.
Of course, it's once again quite a strenuous ups and downs, it takes strength in the heat, and the road is more of a bumpy path, but quite lonely along the northern side of the peninsula. Constant companions are wild lilies, the everlasting scent of chamomile (can be nice, doesn't have to be), a bleat here and there from a sheep, and the endless blue sea. Bantry seems to be endless and far away as well. It's like the fjords in Norway; you see where you need to go, where the town is, but it stretches over 30 kilometers to the end of the peninsula. We also had to take a sheep break. Either them or us. The sheep won. Suddenly, they come through the narrow road bordered by stones on both sides. Full speed and everyone out of the way. Baa! What a life!
Bantry gives the impression that time has stood still, a butcher shop, a household goods store, a photo shop (they surely still develop real films there and so much more that no longer exists with us). We treat ourselves to two huge portions of fish & chips, eat them right at the harbor, and do as the Irish do, celebrating the warm summer evening in the garden of the next pub with a Guinness and apple cider - feeling carefree, light, and cheerful.
Our bed & breakfast is almost in the city, also very nice with many flowers around and a very beautiful room.
