The night in the tent was restless. Anja thought late last night that she could also drink everything she hadn't during the day at our (Fr)Ess marathon. Zipper down, zipper up... and starting again... the bladder must be empty at some point. Well, soon we'll be boiling the morning coffee... The weather promises to be 'blue' again. Packing up and loading the bikes always takes some time. Despite little luggage, everything must always be in the same place. There aren't many food supplies in there either. Some leftovers from the previous evening's shopping still lie untouched in the grass, including the kilo of cherry tomatoes. With the bad roads full of bumps and shakes, it’s not an easy task. We tie them to the back of Anja's bike.
By 10 o'clock we are finally ready and looking for the way to Eurovelo 1 heading north, which is otherwise very well signposted.
Skibbereen doesn't make it easy for us, with many roundabouts, stop streets, and everything in left-hand driving. After being rattled through the one-way street in the center for the second time, Anja notices a bright red tomato on the roadside. Oops, that must be ours. Peter comes back with another one. Anja definitely lost that one. Throughout the day, Peter keeps showing up with his mouth full. Oh, lost another tomato while bouncing up and down on Eurovelo 1. Maybe we should eat the tomatoes instead of playing with them like Hansel and Gretel. In Ballydehop, Peter takes pity on the last tomatoes.
Anja has been having problems with her eyes all day, which are now starting to itch badly. Her eyes are swelling, and she’s getting red spots everywhere. The constant wind, heat, and pollen are not good companions. Immediately to the next pharmacy. The woman there offers sympathetic words and immediately gives Anja antihistamines. Well, luckily the bike has no rearview mirror, otherwise Anja would probably be startled by Quasimodo in the mirror. The medication works quickly, almost too quickly for Peter. He claims there are hidden superpowers in it because Anja suddenly masters the climbs with incredible ease. But actually, we are both - Quasimodo and Peter - happy it helped so quickly, and no, there are no photos.
From now on, we enjoy the ride on the Wild Atlantic Way with a cool breeze, bathe briefly in the cold sea at Schull, and continue towards Ahakista. In the evening at seven, it's still wonderfully warm, the Atlantic sparkles, the light is golden, and we feel similarly. Finally, the ride is going reasonably well, without steep hills. From behind comes a loud shout: ON YOUR RIGHT... a rushing sound and loud shouting as 10 speeding cyclists clad in way-too-tight jerseys due to too much Guinness overtake us noisily. Idio... thinks Anja, visibly startled. A few kilometers further, one has a flat... Peter offers help, Anja offers karma and rides on... ON YOUR RIGHT... here they come again. Grrrr..... Anja's only thought is about the tomatoes from this morning, what a pity, isn't there a few more...
The day ends at Renmoore Farmhouse on Sheed Head Island. The hostess Jennie welcomes us with tea and cake ... very lovely... in her guesthouse with flower-pattern curtains and floral bed linens... all very lovely... This will surely be a peaceful night with colorful flowery dreams...
