As we've temporarily said goodbye to self-cooking, we're curious every morning about what breakfast will bring. Today it's exceptional again. There's even a menu and a buffet, all freshly cooked with ingredients from the neighborhood. Well-nourished, we drive 1 km, then we stop at the next supermarket. We haven't come far, no, we're not hungry either, but we need to replenish our snack supplies. The weather is again, believe it or not, wonderful, blue, sunny, 22 degrees. The ride along the Eurovelo northwards is going quite well today (the road is quite new), and the next peninsula awaits us - Beara Peninsula. Our hostess suggested that we take a swim stop in Glengarriff at the Blue Pool. Well, the Blue Pool was more like a Brown Pool during our visit. It was low tide, which doesn't exactly invite one to bathe. The tidal range here in the area is about 5 meters, which is quite significant, and it often looks a bit desolate. However, the town itself was not brown but very cozy and colorful, with pubs and nice shops. Anja found a nice Irish bracelet that she had been looking for since the beginning of the trip, for her left wrist as a reminder of which way is left for better orientation in left-hand traffic because we all know about the women on the left. Rosi also received a blue band that Anja made from an old fishing net found on the beach.
In the village, we discovered an island on a map that can be reached by a small car ferry. Sounds great, let's do it. Bere Island. 4 cars, parked very closely and two bicycles and plenty of food boxes. The island is about 10 kilometers long and just as one would imagine, a few farms, the ship's landing place, a shop for everything—really everything, from Haribo to fishing hooks, post office, bank, and coffee all at once. Everyone knows everyone. At the boat dock, the whole village gathers, and we’re right in the middle of it, swimming with all the villagers in the Atlantic at a refreshing 14 degrees. A refreshing experience in every sense. The sky is still shining blue as we embark on the half-hour return trip in four cars at half past six in the evening. Hang on, we saw the ferryman in the afternoon, didn't we? Oh right, he served us coffee and apple pie in the coffee/shop. Just like that, everyone knows everyone, and everyone can do everything and is needed for everything. It's somehow impressive to see how the 'Bere Island' community functions and almost a bit enviable.
In the evening we arrive at a B&B in Castletownbere with a beautiful view over the bay.
The sun sets around ten, and we enjoy one last tea on the terrace, happy about the satisfying day that has shown us once again how simple everything could really be....
