Week 60 - Rocky Mountains and Wildlife

In addition to a beaver and a muskrat, we also saw a bald eagle.</p><p>We moved on to Glacier National Park. There was a small booth from 'Parks Canada' on-site, where a ranger informed visitors about the presence of bears and warned about the dangers and appropriate behavior.</p><p>We are already well-equipped and informed but still hope that we won’t get too close to any bears.</p><p>We continued on to Yoho National Park. We hiked from the Takakkaw Falls to Yoho Lake. This challenging but beautiful hike took us through dense forest to a small lake with stunning views of the neighboring peaks. At the lake, we were completely alone and enjoyed the tranquility. The loop trail led us over snow-covered mountain slopes. Due to the heavy snow, navigating the path became increasingly difficult, but with GPS and good orientation, we managed this little adventure safely. We were rewarded with a great view of Takakkaw Falls, which is the second-largest waterfall in Canada at 373m. We also spotted a marmot.</p><p>The next day, we took it easy on our legs and only took a small but lovely walk along Emerald Lake. The reflection of the mountains in the lake was particularly beautiful.</p><p>The following day was set to be a distinctly touristy day. We visited the two lakes, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. These are likely two of the most visited places in Canada and are absolute hotspots. Both lakes can be accessed via a shuttle bus, which we had to book two days in advance. Sometimes, it’s so crowded that you can’t get a shuttle for the day at all. The official shuttle from Parks Canada is significantly cheaper at $12 CAD per person compared to private providers, making it very popular.</p><p>We started early to avoid the huge crowds as much as possible and planned a longer hike at Lake Louise. Even at the Park and Ride, it became clear how many people are processed here daily.</p><p>At the lake itself, we quickly left the largest crowds behind us. The trails were still much busier than on our previous hikes, but it was manageable.</p><p>We hiked to several viewpoints, the Little Beehive, the Big Beehive, and the Devil's Thumb. Especially the last one was quite challenging, but we were rewarded with a fantastic view without other people around.</p><p>Back at the lake, there were significantly more people than in the morning.</p><p>After a further shuttle ride to Moraine Lake, we were fully immersed in the crowds. Since we were already quite exhausted, we only went to a nearby viewpoint. After securing a small spot among countless people and taking a few pictures, we decided to head back.</p><p>While traveling in the camper, we passed our first black bear. Many cars had already stopped on the roadside, and many people were busy taking photos.</p><p>We also stopped to see the bear. Technically, it’s not entirely permitted to stop on the roadside, but it was our first bear, and it’s definitely special to spot such beautiful animals.</p><p>Since Banff is just as beautiful but at least as crowded as Lake Louise, we decided to skip it and head straight to Canmore. Here, we took advantage of our rest day to do some shopping, laundry, and fill up on gas before heading on to Kananaskis Provincial Park.</p><p>There’s a casino just outside the park where you can park overnight for free, which is ideal for us.</p><p>Today, we took advantage of the good weather for a hike on the Wasootch Ridge Trail.</p><p>After that, we spent a relaxed afternoon at Barrier Lake before heading back to the casino parking lot.</p>

We have fully arrived in the Canadian Rockies. The scenery is simply beautiful and we are constantly amazed. Even while driving from point A to point B, we admire the rocky mountains, numerous lakes, and the breathtaking panorama.

This week we covered quite a few kilometers. We notice this every time we refuel. Gas prices can vary significantly depending on the region, roughly ranging from $1.60 to $2.00 CAD.

1.60 CAD is approximately 1 Euro. 

Our camper isn't one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles, but we are doing our best to drive somewhat economically. We consume around 18 L/100km and are quite satisfied with that. However, the expenses for gasoline will still take up a large portion of our budget in the upcoming weeks.

As friendly and helpful as Canadians are, this trait seems to completely vanish on the road. It’s rare to be let in when merging, and defensive driving is virtually nonexistent; if others think we're driving too slowly, they often let us know by honking or giving the middle finger.

During our visit to Revelstoke, we were able to satisfy a strong craving. There was actually pretzels available for purchase at a German bakery there. They were really good, and we were very happy to eat something
