Verstappen is the winner of the Singapore Grand Prix. We are only incidentally in Singapore for the Formula 1 weekend because I completely overlooked this event while booking the flight ticket. We don't see much of the grand event, except that yesterday on Saturday, as we ascended Fort Canning Hill, the roar of racing cars echoed through the city center, and fan hats and jerseys were visible.
Today for the race, our curiosity draws us to the track, which is, of course, well-secured: entry only with a ticket.
We stroll past the National Gallery, where we can see a grandstand in the distance behind the barricade.
We continue towards Marina Bay, where the entrance gate 6 is set up right behind the Merlion.
We take the metro to the Promenade station, where many shopping malls are located along the route. Always on the lookout for a public viewing. However, these are scarce, and only TVs are hung in (expensive) restaurants. In the shopping malls, however, fans have repeatedly gathered in spots where they can catch a glimpse of the track.
Large crowds gather there, which is curious because the cars zip by so quickly that you can't even recognize their color. But perhaps the fans just love the sound feeling of a race. Many sit there following the race on their smartphones or the laptops they brought along.
In the shopping mall, there is a fan zone set up by the Williams racing team, with the Spanish driver Sainz expected to finish in 14th place later on.
Now and then, we spot people taking a look at the track. This is a view that fans enjoy. The distorted and blurred dot on the track behind a window beam is a racing car that accidentally happened to be in the shot... well, somehow it was there.
We then stumble upon a public viewing in the beer garden of the Paulaner Brauhaus at the foot of the Millenia Walk shopping mall, where the atmosphere is excellent.
Just a few meters behind the screen, actual Formula 1 racing cars whiz by behind a green fence.
The public viewing offers a much better view after all.
We can't really get excited about this sport and make our way towards the metro station. But Singapore will still remain in the Formula 1 fever tonight.
Our visiting program in the city-state was so packed that I will only find time to report on it here in my travel blog in the next few days back in Germany. So stay tuned.
