4-Day-Uyuni-Tour - Day 1

Published: 17.06.2017

We booked our tour to the Salar de Uyuni shortly after arriving at Hostel La Torre in Tupiza. Since the hostel also offered tours, it was the easiest option for us. On Wednesday morning, after breakfast at 7:30 am, we set off. The car was packed with 4 large suitcases and backpacks, a gas bottle and cans. In addition, there were 6 people in the jeep with hand luggage and food for the 4 days, and of course sleeping bags for everyone so that we wouldn't freeze our butts off at -20°C with no heating. 🛌

Then we set off with our English guide Elvis and driver Toto (we couldn't remember the real name). There was also a Canadian and an Australian with us, so communication was easy.

The first stop was an enclosure with llamas, where they apparently spend the night and snuggle up to endure the nightly sub-zero temperatures.

Interestingly, there were also a few individuals here with different eye colors - although the blue eye looked more like a glass eye - somewhat creepy!

Afterwards, we stopped for lunch in a small town where we ate Bolivian 'bife' - a kind of rice with lentil stew. Surprisingly delicious.

After a filling lunch, we went climbing in the Ciudad del Encanto National Park (€1.50 entrance fee). 🐒

Our guide was full of energy and climbing enthusiasm and showed us all possible formations. The national park was formed by volcanic eruptions, and there is a layer of lava on the entire stone wall. 🗻

At the end of the path is the Door to Hell 👿 - Tom followed Elvis' example and climbed in.

Finally, we went to the hot springs - unfortunately, they didn't convince us. And the statement of 20°C water temperature rather put us off (it was probably around 30°C in the end - still cool with an outside temperature of 10°C).

After arriving at the hostel in San Pablo de Lipez, we only waited for our dinner and crawled into our sleeping bags at half past 8 and fell asleep. - morning room temperature: -2°C
