Toul Sleng - or S-21 - was the secret center of the killing machinery of the Khmer Rouge. Today, the facility, originally a school, houses the Genocide Museum. Out of respect, we did not take any photos; instead, we allowed ourselves to be guided for three and a half hours by an audio guide through the museum, deeply shaken.
The number of people who were tortured into giving false confessions before being taken to the Killing Fields and killed is unknown. Only twelve people, including four children who had hidden under piles of clothes during the liberation of the prison, survived S-21.
