Walk along the Windy Coast

Coastal Walk/Hike

Late start today, no appointments. So we slept in, had a hearty breakfast, and planned the day ahead.

We already knew the way to the correct bus stop; there was no need to search for long. Just had to wait longer than anticipated. The small e-bus should have departed long ago, but it didn't show up. So we boarded the next bus to the hotel area; our hike was supposed to start here.

The weather was warm, sunny, and quite windy. There's a saying in East Frisia about such wind strength: 'It's only windy when the sheep on the dike no longer have curls'.

Today, this could have also applied in Madeira. There were again beautiful views of the rough sea, and on the last segment toward Camara de Lobos, we encountered a closed pathway. A lot of people and dogs were out and about with us.

Along the seaside hike, we came across some sea swimming pools, where the ocean actually rushed in and provided water exchange. Some were being cleaned, and in some spots, sun loungers had already been placed and were even occupied.

The path also led us through a tunnel, which was only somewhat lit and quite wet. I can’t say where the water came from, but it dripped on my backpack as well. The seaside promenade naturally offered various bars. So we also enjoyed our Bica and a Bolo do Caco. Unfortunately, the Bolo wasn't as tasty as the previous ones. Strengthened, we made our way back to Funchal.

There were again steep paths and also streets that were a special challenge for me. But I managed it all well and took the bus for the last stretch again. Taking the bus on the island is truly recommended. There’s a lot to see and it's inexpensive.

Upon arriving at the harbor, we watched the sailing school and the surfers to enjoy the last sunbeams of the day. Tonight, we will have a meal at the hotel and start packing our bags. Unfortunately, we are headed back to cold Germany tomorrow.
