Traveling on our own paths

No sleeping in on Saturday; a whole hour of QiGong! It starts here at 7:00 AM due to the time difference. It was still dark and very windy outside. No problem, there was plenty of space in front of the balcony door.

After breakfast, we set out to find a bus that would take us to Machico. We asked again at the intended bus stop. So we looked for a stop on the other street instead. Then an espresso bus turned the corner, with the desired destination written on it.

The ride didn't last as long as expected. We arrived in sunshine and very pleasant temperatures. Always along a stream towards the sea; the market hall should be here. And it was – unfortunately closed for renovations. However, there were some stalls with fruits, flowers, handicrafts, and one stand was run by a baker who was kneading dough and making Bolo do Caco. Additionally, there was the stand of the Grether family, who produce organic products from the Aloe tree here in Madeira. The family followed their dream a few years ago and feels very comfortable here. After a quick chat, we were off to the next place.

Our goal was Santa Cruz. Also by the sea, the pearl of Madeira was supposed to expect us – as stated by the travel guide. The beach promenade is really beautifully designed with black and white pebbles. In between there are a few small bars, hotels, and a playground for little ones in a park. The wind was bringing waves to the shore, which were not alarming. At least the many small dark crabs warmed themselves unfazed by the spray on the black stones.

The small detour to the church was worth it. There was neither singing like in Machico, where a ladies' choir practiced, nor was there any organ music being rehearsed. But the design of the ceiling was more than worth seeing. Since I don't like to take photos in churches, there are no pictures of it.

In a small side alley, we treated ourselves to a break with Bica, water, Bolo do Caco, and tapas with ham and mozzarella. Everything was really delicious and very filling. Not to miss the bus that would take us back to Funchal, we made our way in good time. In a somewhat overgrown garden, a rooster entertained us. The bus then took us back to the hotel through the beginning rain. The last 300 meters were a bit wet, but it dries quickly here.

We haven't thought about dinner yet for tonight. Eating at the hotel is convenient, but it’s more interesting at the snack bar Bela 5. We’ll wait and see what the weather has to offer around 7:00 PM.
