Esens -
last day at the sea

Travemünde
And now our journey takes us to the Baltic Sea – during the hot days at the beginning of summer. I had hoped that the proximity to the sea would make it feel less hot for us.
That didn’t quite work out. But over 30* isn’t everyday here either. At least our hotel room has a balcony facing the back yard, where part of it is in the shade from 14:00 onwards.
The starting point was the Brodtenerufer. Located just outside of Travemünde – next to a fairly large area of a golf course – the land is increasingly being taken over by the Baltic Sea. For many years now, parts of the shore have been eroding and disappearing into the sea; including all the trees and houses that are on it. Only the bank swallows are happy about new nesting sites.
Since it will continue to be a wooded hiking and cycling path (Baltic Sea Cycling Route), it was quite busy. The views from here rewarded all those cyclists and hikers who climbed the hill. At the top, we were also rewarded at LUV&LEE. Gastronomy with a view of the Baltic Sea. After a milk coffee with poppy seed marzipan cake, all calories were replenished and we were ready for the next challenge.
As it wasn’t completely warm yet, we set off for Haffkrug; the pier there was now the destination for many Baltic Sea visitors. It has also been beautifully done and is not as wobbly as the Black Forest Line in Todtnau. No idea how high the current water temperatures of the Baltic Sea were, but some people bravely ventured into the waters with the jellyfish, which even I could recognize in the water. There were quite a few of them around.
And since the day was still quite young, back to Travemünde to spend a CHARMING HOUR with HANSE Shipping. From here over the container and
ferry port into Pötenitzer Wiek and back. Time for espresso for us, cocktails and salads for some fellow travelers. It was a relaxing hour with explanations from the captain and a bit of fresh breeze.
Let’s see where our hunger leads us later in the evening. Until then, just enjoying the cries of the seagulls, the song of the waves in the beach chair.
See you soon!
