The City of the Bear

Picking up rolls at Bäckerei VICTORBUR at the Harle. Set aside plenty of time for breakfast during our drive to Esens, where a small arts event was announced.

The weather was again sunny and hot; 28 degrees is quite unusual for this region. The city center attracted with numerous outdoor dining options, a shanty choir in the marketplace, children's entertainment, living statues, stilt walkers, songs from the 60s and 70s, and so on. It was quite crowded in the pedestrian zone and the side streets. 

The TROMMELBÄR offered not just great wooden toys for people aged 5 to 99, but also served a very tasty espresso. Unfortunately, the operators will soon be moving back to Switzerland and will sell everything online from there.

Enjoyed coffee and cake in the garden in Carolinensiel. Took a stroll to Harlesiel once more. The sluice gate and embankment are being rebuilt again – in response to rising sea levels. Therefore, the path to the beach and kite festival led through the large campground. The WATTKIEKER next door has a lovely terrace with a sea view and sun umbrellas (which were important today); there we found a spot and had a delicious dinner.

Since the kite festival delighted to start with lights around 9 PM, we headed to the beach with many other visitors. We quickly pushed two beach chairs together, waited for the sunset, and watched the setup of the kites. New kites were continuously released into the air, accompanied by background music.

Unfortunately, the sun was increasingly veiled by haze, which didn’t make the photos very appealing. But the door to room number 1 at the beach allowed many visitors to create some funny videos. We bid farewell to the kites and the beach before the sun had fully set.

Even in today's heat, it was very pleasant to be near the North Sea: always a light breeze for cooling. So, just spend the hot days at the coast, even if many others have the same idea and contribute to overcrowded streets and places. Nevertheless, it was a lovely trip.
