Over the Afsluitdijk to Hoorn

We continued towards Hoorn over the Afsluitdijk, which connects the provinces of Noord-Holland and Friesland. The Afsluitdijk is 32 km long and is considered the most important single structure of the Zuiderzee Works for land reclamation and coastal protection in the Netherlands, sealing off the former Zuiderzee (South Sea) from the North Sea. Its construction was completed in 1932 and also included the construction of two large tidal barriers to drain the incoming freshwater. A motorway (the A7) and a cycle and pedestrian path run along the dam. The barrier dam transformed the tidal estuary of the Zuiderzee (“the South Sea”) into the inland waterway of the IJsselmeer (“the IJssel Lake”).
