San Bernardino Pass - Day 31

On our outbound journey, the San Bernardino Pass was still closed due to snow remnants on the road. However, it is now open, and it's a great way to avoid the usual traffic jams at the Gotthard Tunnel. Additionally, this route is a scenic and beautiful alternative to the Gotthard Tunnel. Therefore, we decided to take the pass.

However, our navigation system led us right through Milan on the way there. That took quite a bit of time and nerves, but we eventually made it through.

The pass is definitely worth a slight detour, and there was much less traffic compared to the highway and the tunnel.

It's really nice to drive in good weather.

The San Bernardino Pass is a mountain pass in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, with a peak elevation of 2066 m above sea level, and you also cross the inner Swiss language border between German and Italian there.

The pass is named after a chapel from the 15th century, built in honor of Saint Bernard of Siena. The route, built between 1818 and 1823, still serves traffic today, following the original path from 1770, just slightly softened.

All in all, we can only say that the drive over the San Bernardino Pass was an experience in itself, with fantastic views that made each curve a special moment.

One more night in Switzerland before heading a little closer to home the next morning.
