South Sweden Tour - Day 9
Today it’s 'Goodbye Öland', we are leaving the island and heading to Kalmar.
Since we still had some time, we passed by the ruins of Borgholm Castle and looked at it from the outside. We had actually wanted to do this yesterday, but after our visit to the Öland Museum Himmelsberga, we didn’t have time anymore.
Borgholm Castle is located near the city of Borgholm on the western side of the Swedish island of Öland. It has stood on a cliff overlooking the Kalmarsund for 900 years. It was a castle, a fortress, a Renaissance castle, a Baroque palace, and a prestigious object in many ways before it was destroyed by a fire in the early 19th century. The ruins have become one of Sweden's most impressive and well-known cultural-historical monuments and are part of our cultural heritage.
There is much to see on Öland, but you definitely need much more time than we had there.
Not far from Borgholm Castle, there is a nearly 6-meter high bust of Queen Victoria, which was erected in 1938 by King Gustav V in honor of his wife, Queen Victoria. Solliden Castle, also on Öland, was built by Queen Victoria as a summer residence and is still used today as the summer seat of the royal family.
On the 136 we went again in the direction of the Ölandsbron, the bridge that connects the island of Öland with the mainland.
Upon arriving in Kalmar, we made ourselves at home, as we had plans to meet acquaintances and will stay here for 4 nights together.
We spent the afternoon and evening sitting together in a cozy gathering and also had dinner.
