.... in our view a clear 'must do' when in Auckland.

The first fast ferry departed from the Ferry Terminal in Auckland, passing over Davenport to the Matiatia dock on Waiheke Island. The island is known for its vineyards and wine production as well as being a retreat for affluent New Zealanders, which is why almost all prices on the island are double those on the mainland. Additionally, the island features numerous bays alongside hilly terrain and small sun-soaked settlements.

Leaving the Ferry Terminal was fantastic, thanks to the view of the Auckland skyline.

Upon arrival at Waiheke Island, we took a 'Hop-on-Hop-off Bus' .... to the first vineyard 7 (Wild Estate) along with a tasting of rosé and red wines: wonderfully laid out, great wines, and very friendly service.
On the next bus, we then went to Onetangi Beach .... a picture-perfect beach, nearly 2 km long, with crashing waves, many surfers, small cafés and restaurants, and hilly hinterland .... what more could one want? Karsten ventured into the waves, while Maria kept her fingers crossed; everything turned out well.

Our next stop was back at another vineyard (Stonyridge) with a charming view over the Onetangi Valley. Due to its sheltered location, it is on average two degrees warmer here than on the rest of the island, making it particularly suitable for many vineyards. Here, we tasted a nice rosé with the melodious name Fallen Angel.

The conclusion of our short visit to Waiheke was a stroll through the pretty town of Oneroa .... the highlight of which is certainly the small but picturesque beach surrounded by rocky cliffs.

By the way .... due to the unique weather on the island, a very good olive oil is also produced here.

In the afternoon, we unfortunately had to head back to Auckland on the fast ferry .... we will keep Waiheke in very good memory!
