San Antonio, the large harbor in the small town, after the reconstruction of Valparaiso (after a major earthquake) now has only the small port left.
However, the focus is much more on the capital Santiago, located about 100 km away at the foot of the Andes. This metropolis of 8 million is the seat of government, political center, and financial hub.
The route to Santiago goes through the Casablanca Valley. This not very fertile area was primarily used for cattle and horse farming. Now mainly wine and avocados are cultivated there.
Santiago is, of course, a city with historical buildings and squares, such as Plaza de Armas, the Metropolitan Cathedral, or La Moneda, the seat of the president, as well as the founding site of Chile (where the former president Allende also worked). Nevertheless, the city is dominated by skyscrapers, particularly the tallest building in South America, the Sky Costanera. The view from the observation deck on the 62nd floor is simply breathtaking. Due to its resemblance to Manhattan, Santiago is often referred to as 'Sanhattan'.
