17.07.2019: Monastery and Caves

40 km from Datong there is the hanging monastery. 1500 years ago, it was decided to build a monastery 50 meters in the steep wall. The monastery is still hanging in its original form. Our ambition/group pressure has motivated us to examine the structure up close. Unbelievable what the builders achieved back then. This thing holds.

In the afternoon we visited the Yungang Caves (World Heritage Site). About 1500 years ago, approximately 5000 Buddhas were carved into the caves in the rock. The largest one is 26 meters. Fascinating.
