Sepilok

Today we traveled by boat to Sepilok. Here there is a rescue center for the Malaysian sun bear, which is endangered. Next door is the orangutan rehabilitation center. The park covers 43 square kilometers, so it's huge. On the way there, we saw a paradise snake that had wandered into the dining area.

The Malaysian sun bear has a tongue that is 25-30 cm long. With it, he licks up termites and honey.

Orangutans generally live alone, except during mating season and while raising their young. The father disappears after conception, and the mother raises the baby completely alone for about 9 years. Female offspring stay with their mother a bit longer to learn how to care for the young.
