Today we head to Polonnaruwa, a 1000-year-old royal city. It is a 1.5-hour TukTuk ride from Sigirya. On the way there, we passed through a lot of nature and enjoyed plenty of wildlife sightings throughout the day. Even before we arrived, we were already happy with all the encounters we had. Among other things, we saw Hornbills that were really easy to observe and actually spotted wild elephants twice. It was amazing for nature lovers. Here in Sri Lanka, you can see so many animals in a short amount of time, it’s truly impressive. Upon arriving in Polonnaruwa, we rented a bicycle because the old city complex is very expansive. We leisurely explored many ancient ruins, temples, Buddha statues, etc. It was really a feast for the eyes. The temperature after noon soared above 30 degrees, it was brutally hot. In the temples, you always had to enter barefoot, and the stones and sand were extremely hot. So people started to run barefoot from shade to shade because it felt like their soles were burning off. Nevertheless, the visit was a highlight. On the way back, we grabbed stuffed Roti for lunch and munched on it during the ride since we were somewhat pressed for time to head home. All in all, it was a top-notch day. The area is truly recommendable!
And it's totally cool that wild peacocks strut around in the garden of our accommodation every day....and chipmunks...so cute...Uli completely smitten....
