There were still 5.5 km to the Cathedral of Saint James, the patron saint of the city. The name is derived directly from Sanctus Jacobus.
We took the bus and after twenty minutes, we arrived in downtown Santiago. As soon as we crossed the city limits, the pull of the center, which we had already observed from the bus, became significantly stronger. No signs were needed; you simply followed the other people and inevitably reached the cathedral in the heart of the old town.
We circled the grand building, took photos, and were impressed by the crowd of people. While some celebrated the end of their journey on the 'Praza do Obradoiro', taking photos or lying exhausted on the ground, others stood in long, endless lines to enter the interior of the house of worship.
We spared ourselves the waiting and continued walking through the city. Passing by the 'Fonte Sequelo' towards the east. At the 'Mercado de Abastos', we purchased a few potatoes. Then we continued, passing the 'Convento de Belvis', going under the highway and over the freeway, out of the city.
We climbed the hill of the 'Bosque de Galicia' and circled the 'Cidade da Cultura', then we went back through fields and woods to Gary.
When we arrived after more than two hours of hiking, we first jumped into the pool of the campsite.
In the evening, we went to the restaurant right next door and ordered local specialties. Mmmmh, delicious!
