This morning, we visited the village of Lomaloma on Vanua Balavu Island. Vanua Balavu is a small island that belongs to Fiji.
The island of Vanua Balavu and its nearby islands are surrounded by a coral reef. This lagoon is not deep, but the ship was able to enter, though not all the way to the village itself. We had to travel quite far by Zodiac boats to reach the village. The weather is as usual, about 28°C and very humid.
In the village, we were warmly welcomed with singing, performances, and an initial tour. Since it is Good Friday, we first attended a church service. This was more comparable to our own services than, for example, Caribbean or African services.
Afterwards, there were more singing performances along with dance, snacks, and refreshments.
We could see the village; it is also very green and has many streams and small rivers. There are still traces of a cyclone from last year that stripped many trees and severely damaged houses. The locals are very friendly and love to be photographed. However, the village, like all the small islands of Fiji, is losing its inhabitants. The village has about 200 houses but fewer than 200 inhabitants now.
