We wake up a little earlier than usual this morning and decide on a whim to take the 9 a.m. ferry. Thankfully, we were wise enough to book a flex ticket – allowing us to catch any ferry that day. So, quick teeth brushing and off we go.
Breakfast takes place pragmatically in line at the ferry terminal. We have plenty of time and no stress. Just as we finish, the line begins to move. The sea is calm, the crossing goes by quickly, and even the subsequent drive is relaxed. By 1 p.m. we arrive at Wiek on Rügen, in high spirits, and of course, we first treat ourselves to a fresh fish sandwich – it’s simply a must! After a brief stop at the kite spot, we walk on to the Blossom Café for a slice of cake. Later in the afternoon, we settle into our cozy little holiday apartment. After so many weeks on the road, it feels wonderful to have something familiar around again and not always have to check Google Maps to figure out how to get somewhere or if the restaurant is well-rated and delivers on its promises. Since it is already off-season (thankfully!), we will have to wait two more days until our favorite fish restaurant opens. On the first evening, we simply make ourselves comfortable indoors – quite unusual to not be exposed to the elements. But very nice.
The following days fly by. Sometimes quite literally, as Frank manages to sneak in another kite session. We hike through the Schaabe – the spit of land between the main part of the island and the Wittow peninsula – eat ice cream, and enjoy the peace.
Wednesday calls for a big outing. We take the bus to Putgarten and walk from there to Cape Arkona and on to the little fishing village of Vitt. Of course, there’s another fish sandwich waiting for us. Afterward, we move on to 'Kleine Rast', a charming café with beach chairs on the cliffs. Here, they serve the best homemade cake and the most beautiful view at the same time. Since we find it so delightful there, one piece of cake and coffee isn’t enough. We are all the more grateful that we have to walk the long way to Drewoldke. And because a day of indulgence should remain just that, we head to the 'Boddenstübchen' in the evening – where the tastiest food on the island can be found – and afterwards enjoy a gin and tonic with friends.
The next morning, we finally drive home to our beautiful and, after all those weeks, seemingly gigantic apartment.
And that concludes our adventure in the far north. The van gets a well-deserved break now as we will be heading to the warm south in the coming days – this time using a different mode of transport. A new adventure awaits… perhaps we’ll take you along again? What do you think?
Final Stop: Island Bliss

Breakfast happens right there in the line at the ferry terminal. Plenty of time, no stress. Just as we finish, the line starts moving. The sea is calm, the crossing passes quickly, and even the drive afterward is easygoing. By 1 p.m. we arrive in Wiek on Rügen, in great spirits, and of course, the first thing we treat ourselves to is a proper fish sandwich – non-negotiable! After a short stop at the kite spot, we continue on to the Blossom Café for a slice of cake. Later that afternoon, we move into our cozy little holiday apartment. After so many weeks on the road, it feels wonderful to be surrounded by something familiar again – not always checking Google Maps to figure out how to get somewhere or whether the food will be any good. Since it’s already off-season (thankfully!), we’ll have to wait two more days until our favorite fish restaurant opens. With stormy and uncomfortable weather outside, we simply make ourselves cozy indoors that evening. Strange not to be at the mercy of the elements – but nice.
The next days fly by. Sometimes quite literally, since Frank even manages to squeeze in a kite session. We spend time hiking through the Schaabe – the long, sandy spit connecting the southern part of the island with the Wittow peninsula – eating ice cream, and enjoying the quiet.

From there, we continue to 'Kleine Rast', a charming café perched on the cliffs with beach chairs overlooking the sea. It serves the best homemade cake with the most beautiful view. It’s so good we can’t stop at just one slice. Which makes us all the more grateful for the long walk to Drewoldke afterward. To complete this indulgent day, we head to the 'Boddenstübchen' in the evening – hands down the best food on the island – and later enjoy a gin and tonic with friends.
The next morning, it’s finally time to head home – back to our apartment, which after all these weeks feels both wonderful and ridiculously huge.
And with that, our adventure in the far north comes to an end. The van now gets a well-deserved break while we head further south in the coming days – this time with a different way of getting around. A new adventure awaits… maybe we’ll take you along again? What do you think?
