About Altenwörth to Tulln

Published: 06.07.2017

Before I saddle up our rubber boat again on Monday (03.07.2017), I take a detour to Mautern with Rango. Actually, just to get some groceries, but at the city limits, a sign invites me to take a walk along the Roman Way. Why not... According to informative signs and vividly supported by excavations, the place was already inhabited almost 2000 years ago and was part of the Roman border fortifications against the barbaric north. After this short excursion into Central European history, I continue downstream around noon. This time, the wind doesn't really help, so the next 25km are quite a bit of work. Shortly before eight o'clock, I dock at a kind of city park after transferring into the Krems dammed up by Altenwörth and settle into our camp for the night.

The next morning, shortly after starting, I have to transfer our clipper back into the Danube. Due to a small oversight, I lose one of my paddles in the process. I notice the loss in time and manage to catch it again after a short while. Lucky me! Since the wind is coming from an unfavorable direction, contrary to what the weather report suggested, I decide to dock again and take down the tent cover. The remaining journey to Tulln is very relaxed. After the dam at Altenwörth, the current has gained some momentum again and I can drift along.

When I arrive at the campsite, I take the opportunity to do some laundry (for the first time, laundry detergent is available for the washing machine - a great thing). In the evening, I head towards Tulln with my bike. Unfortunately, the Tulln Gardens (which show natural garden design) are already closed and we can only walk around. In the dark, we sneak through the narrow streets of the old town, take a break at the Donau stage and are back at the tent by midnight.
