Split-Apple – who doesn't know it... and Thorsten's Worn-Out-Shoes

Published: 22.11.2024

We wanted to take a look at another highlight. Not far from Marahau lies the famous "Split-Apple" in Tasman Bay. The split rock is about 50 meters from the shore in the water, and you can walk to it through shallow water at low tide.

It is a granite rock that is split in half, almost like magic. No one really knows how it happened. The Maori say that two gods fought over this (whole) rock and could not come to an agreement. Then, one of them split the rock in the middle so that each could have a part.

Scientifically, it is said that 300 million years ago meltwater flowed into the granite stone and then during the Ice Age, the ice shattered the granite rock... but so smooth??? However it really happened, we find the monument truly impressive and believe that we should have seen it...

On the way back, we stop at the street of Old Shoes (that's what you find online). We happened to discover this curiosity during our first drive along the road we have since traveled multiple times. Definitely more than 100 pairs of shoes are hanging there, some for quite a long time... We spontaneously decided that we wanted to hang Thorsten's old shoes there. That's what we did today. What lies behind the old slippers, we do not know, and we couldn't figure it out either...
