I have to introduce you to the Italian city of Udine. What a gem!

It is located near the borders of Austria and Slovenia, thus at the eastern edge of Italy. Perhaps that’s why it is (still) not overrun by tourists. We encountered only a few other vacationers, and certainly because of this, we had only pleasant interactions with the locals.

The prices in Udine are also more reasonable than in more touristy places in Italy. For instance, the Aperol Spritz was available here for 4.50 euros, and it was not watered down at all! And then imagine the following scenario elsewhere: We visited the charming Osteria Pierimortadele. Here you can watch the kitchen staff prepare the appetizers or the snack board. A huge mortadella not only forms part of the establishment's name but is also sliced repeatedly. We had a total of 6 appetizers, a snack board, and drinks, and we were supposed to pay 32 euros. I wanted to round it to 35, but the owner did the opposite. He only wanted 30 euros and insisted on it!

Now back to the facts: Udine was closely tied to the Republic of Venice for centuries. Therefore, the architecture partially resembles that of Venice. The beautiful Piazza della Libertà is often referred to as the “most Venetian square on the mainland.” Overall, the entire historic city center is very worth seeing, and you can relax with a cappuccino everywhere.

If Udine were located directly by the sea, cruise ships would surely dock here. Instead, you have a clear view of the Alps and tranquility!
