Runkelstein Castle

Coming home on vacation feels the same for me in Bolzano. We are here in the sunny south, but it still has the familiarity of home. This is, of course, also due to the German language, as much as I enjoy speaking English. Our arrival at 37 °C also had a subtle sense of familiarity, as it was just as hot in Germany at that time.
Fortunately, here in Bolzano, one can quickly escape to higher altitudes. An excursion to the Seiser Alm brings about 10 °C lower temperatures, as the high plateau is at an elevation of between 1,680 m and 2,350 m. The lift conveniently takes you to the main settlement of Compatsch at 1,850 m. If the ride wasn’t so expensive, costing 30 Euros per person for both ways, we would surely come up here more often. But we always treat ourselves to this while on vacation. This time, we walked the panoramic route, which is uncomplicated yet enchanting. Here, truly one postcard-worthy view follows another.
If we are not exploring the Seiser Alm, we also enjoy heading to the Ritten high plateau. The great advantage here is that it is directly accessible from Bolzano via the Ritten Railway, and with the South Tyrol Guest Pass, the ride is even free for us. Finally, one can reach the beautiful Klobenstein by train or tram. From here, there are also various beautiful hiking trails. This time, we hiked to the earth pyramids. This natural phenomenon occurs due to erosion over centuries, if not millennia. And so, despite the heat down in the valley, one can spend a lot of time in this beautiful nature.
