In the morning we drove early to the Kullaberg Nature Reserve to secure one of the few parking spots for motorhomes (and to avoid the 40 euro fine for illegal parking). Indeed, the parking lot was relatively empty – aside from a caravan that seemed to have overnighted there, which already had a red note stuck to its windshield...

The nature reserve is located in the north of the Kullen Peninsula, which juts out into the Öresund.

We set off past Sweden's highest lighthouse towards the coast, which is particularly scenic with rock formations and heath vegetation.

It was quite stormy, but we walked along rocky paths to a small lighthouse that was located right on the shore and defied the storm.

On the way back, a path branched off down to the water, leading to the “Silver Cave”.

This path was less developed and marked only with painted arrows over the rocks that one had to climb.

In some places, it was not easy to find the way, but we eventually reached the small cave.

You could walk a few meters into the cave, whose high walls rose smoothly before it ended abruptly.

Afterwards, we made our way back up and arrived at the “Naturum”, a small exhibition about the nature reserve that had just opened.

At the lighthouse, we enjoyed the view of the water before embarking on a hike through the nature reserve.

The path went along the coast and through beech forests.

On the way, we also encountered some Galloway cattle, which seem to work here as landscape managers.

After some ups and downs, we returned to the parking lot and decided against another hike and in favor of visiting “Smalandet Markaryds Elk Safari”, a moose and bison park.

Moose Safari
Moose Safari

Around a 18th-century farm, you can today see free-roaming moose and American bison along a 3-kilometer path in either your own car or a “safari train”.

We opted for the train variant, which also provided explanations in Swedish and English.

Our train guide introduced us to the moose by name, and we were allowed to feed them from the train with branches to lure them.

A particularly cheeky specimen named Pelle preferred to stick his head in the locomotive, because there not only were leaves but also carrots and feed to be had.

The bison, which were housed in their own area, also liked coming to the train to be fed fresh leaves.

Bisons

We also saw a calf that had been born just two days prior.

Among the moose, there was a young one named “Knut”, which was already a bit older.

In the evening, we drove a bit further north near the “Store Mosse National Park”, which we wanted to visit the next day. Initially, we had some trouble finding a spot for the night but eventually settled at the Flatens campsite right by a lake.
